Common Questions
How much is $80,000 after tax in Australia?
A resident earning $80,000 in 2026-27 takes home $62,660 per year, or about $2,410 per fortnight. This includes the 15% second bracket, Medicare levy (2%), and the Low Income Tax Offset. Use our calculator above for a personalised breakdown including HECS and super.
What is the tax-free threshold in Australia for 2026-27?
The tax-free threshold is $18,200. If you earn below this amount as an Australian resident, you pay no income tax. If you earn above it, tax applies to the portion above $18,200.
How is HECS/HELP repayment calculated in 2025-26 and 2026-27?
From 1 July 2025, HECS/HELP uses a new marginal system. Repayments only apply to income above $67,000 โ at 15 cents per dollar between $67,000 and $125,000. Previously, the rate applied to your entire income once you crossed the threshold, which created a sudden jump. The new system is fairer and results in smaller compulsory repayments for most.
Does the calculator include superannuation?
Yes. The Superannuation Guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025. Our calculator shows employer super contributions separately โ super goes to your fund, not directly to your bank account. You can toggle 'salary includes super' if your package is quoted as a total package (inclusive of super).
What changed in the 2026-27 financial year for taxes?
The second income tax bracket drops from 16% to 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000. This saves a maximum of $268 per year for anyone earning above $45,000. All other brackets and thresholds remain unchanged from 2025-26.
